Symptom
A backup fails with the error "VSS snapshot creation failed (0x80042306; provider veto)".
Cause
The VSS error "provider veto" usually means the backup is failing because VSS is already in use, i.e. another product (such as a SQL Management Studio dump to .bak, or third-party software) is using VSS at the time of the backup. The backup may also fail because the disk is so busy that the VSS system does not respond in time.
The logs may also show VSS device I/O errors, which are what causes the change block tracking system to lose the snapshots it uses to track file changes from one backup to the next.
Solution
This issue is not related to Redstor's software and may be resolved by one of the following actions:
- Applying any pending Windows updates and rebooting
- Re-registering the VSS DLLs
- Running sfc /scannow
If none of these works, you will need to contact your Windows support provider.
