1318 - Amounts of data protected differ between Microsoft and Redstor

Symptom

A customer's Microsoft 365 admin center reports that they have a particular amount of data in one of their M365 apps. However, the Storage Platform Console or web app reports a lower amount as the total data protected by Redstor.

Cause

For SharePoint mismatches, this may be caused by Teams sites being subsumed into the SharePoint total. For any M365 app, this may be caused by deleted files that are still counted by Microsoft but no longer counted by Redstor.

Solution

If the mismatch is with SharePoint, check the size of the Teams backup group in addition to the SharePoint group. The Teams data may make up the difference in total data protected.

If the mismatch is for total data, bear in mind that Microsoft reports all versions of a file, while Redstor reports only the current version of a file. In addition, deleted files that are being retained as per Microsoft's policies will show up in Microsoft's reporting, but not in Redstor's. This means that the Console will often show a much larger amount of restorable data than selected data. Check the deleted files, as they may make up the difference in total data protected.
