1533 - Error: VSS snapshot creation failed (0x80042308; object not found)

Symptom

A backup fails with the following error:

ERROR : 19:04:24 Backup failed: VSS snapshot creation failed.

In addition, the Windows Event Log shows an error described as Event 25, Volsnap with the error message "The shadow copies of volume x were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time".

Cause

The source of this issue is likely a hardware limitation. The disk is not responding fast enough because it is overloaded.

Solution

To prevent this, change the backup schedule to a time when the machine is less busy, or keep the existing schedule and move other tasks to a different time so they do not coincide with the backup.

You can also change the VSS snapshot volume to a different drive to reduce the load on the original disk. To do this, follow the steps in Article 1535 (server) or use the command-line as shown in Article 1536.
