Follow the steps below to configure email notifications to be sent after certain events in the ESE Agent.
- In the Agent, click the Options button on the toolbar and open the Email Notifications tab.
- Select the desired options for Notifications and Notification Preferences.
- Under Message Settings, enter the desired To and From addresses (separated by semicolons) and subject, as well as whether any attachments should be sent.
- Enter your SMTP server details or select from one of the settings as indicated below:

- SMTP Server: smtp-mail.outlook.com

- This SMTP requires authentication: Enabled -
If you wish to encrypt the connection, enable Encrypt Connection (STARTTLS) and set the required TLS version (1.0/1.1/1.2/1.3). This is also configurable via Profiling in the Storage Platform Console.
-
If the SMTP requires authentication, enter the Username and Password of the account you'll be connecting with.
Note: While it is possible for advanced users to make changes to the email notifications configuration by editing the a5backup.properties file, this is not possible with SMTPs that require authentication. In such cases, all changes must be made through the user interface as described here, or through remote access. -
For Microsoft 365 and Hotmail accounts, test the SMTP connection by clicking the Test button. For Gmail, continue to the section below.
Enabling SMTP for a Google account
If the relevant Google account does not have two-step verification, connecting to the Gmail SMTP server requires additional configuration. Do the following:
- Using a web browser, log into your Google account.
- Click the profile icon located at the top right, then click My Account.
- Click Device activity & notifications.
- Scroll down and turn Allow less secure apps ON.
- Open the ESE Agent again, go to Options > Email Notifications and test the SMTP connection by clicking the Test button at the bottom right.
- If a negative response is received, check the SMTP server settings before trying again.
