Note: For Bare Metal Recovery with InstantData, see Article 1196.
To restore via Bare Metal Recovery (BMR), you will need a Windows installation DVD.
Before you begin
- Enable Windows Image Backup by opening the ESE Agent and going to Tools > Options > Windows Image Backup. Tick All critical volumes and select a valid dump destination.
- Restore the Windows Image Backup containing the BMR backup using a temporary Agent onto some temporary storage - either a USB that will be directly connected, or to a network share that the BMR machine will be able to connect to.
- When the data is restored, rename the "RenamedBMRFolder" back to the name in the "OriginalFoldername.txt" file.
- Either connect the USB drive to the BMR target PC, or ensure that the temporary restore machine is accessible over the network.
Steps
- Using the Windows installation DVD, boot the BMR target PC. When the option is shown, select "Repair".
- On the first System Recovery Options page, click "Next".
- On the second System Recovery Options page, click "Windows Complete PC Restore".
- The Windows Complete PC Restore wizard will launch, and will search your machine for suitable backups to restore from. If your USB drive is connected, this will be detected if the appropriate USB drivers are available. Drivers can be loaded if required.
- If the restored WindowsImageBackup folder is on a network share, you need to specify where to find this. Click "Cancel".
- Click "Next".
- Click "Advanced".
- Click "Search for a backup on the network" (alternatively, you can select "Install a driver" if you have USB and chipset drivers available for your machine).
- Click "Yes" to confirm that the network is trusted.
- On your source machine, make sure the Windows Image Backup is contained within a shared folder. For example, here "Y:\share\" has been shared:
- On the target machine, enter the UNC path to the share where the Windows Image Backup folder resides.
Note: To avoid any name resolution issues, it is often easiest to specify IP addresses rather than host names. - The available backup will now be listed. Click "Next".
- On the "Select the backup to restore" page there should only be one backup available. Click "Next".
- On the "Choose how to restore the backup" page you can install additional drivers if your target hardware is different, exclude disks from the backup, or set advanced options. Click "Next".
- A summary page shows the backup details. Click "Finish".
- Check the "I confirm that I want to format the disks and restore the backup" checkbox, and click "OK" to start the BMR restore.
- The recovery will take anything from a few minutes to a few hours. Allow this to complete.
- When prompted, click on "Restart Now" or wait for the machine to restart automatically.
- The machine will restart and will boot into Windows.
Note: You may be prompted for missing drivers that were not installed during the BMR restore process due to hardware changes that occurred.
