Introduction
Backing up and restoring Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) forms part of our cloud service offering. For more on what functionality we support, click here.
Note:
- To use the AKS backup service, you need to be both a RedApp company administrator, and an owner / service administrator / co-administrator of the Azure subscription for the clusters you want to back up. If you do not have the required permissions level, you may be able to list the AKS instances in your subscription, but you will not be able to select them for backup.
- For AKS troubleshooting, see our guide here.
Use the guide below to manage your AKS backups.

How to recover a cluster
Watch our video or follow the steps below.
1. On the home page for the relevant cluster, locate the backup you wish to recover. Click on the menu icon, select Recover to and select your choice of destination.
- This cluster restores the data into the current cluster, which is already protected by Redstor.
- Another cluster restores the data into a different cluster of your choice. If this destination cluster is not already protected by Redstor, you will have the option to add protection for it.
If you are restoring to another cluster, please note the following:
- The alternate cluster must be in the same Azure tenant.
- When restoring to a different region (even in the same Azure tenant), persistent volumes (disk snapshots) will not be restored.
2. Follow the steps below based on your choice of destination.
(a) If you selected This cluster, you now have the option to provide a namespace prefix for the recovery. You can also leave the name of the source cluster as is.
Click Recover. You will need to authenticate before you can proceed.
(b) If you selected Another cluster, you will need to authenticate before you can proceed. You will then be presented with a list of clusters you have access to in Azure. Select the cluster you want to recover to.
If you wish to provide a namespace prefix, click on the menu icon and then on Specify namespace prefix.
If you do not want to add the target cluster to you Redstor backups, click Recover. If you want to add the target cluster to your Redstor backups, click Recover and add.
You can then monitor the progress of your recovery on the cluster's home page or under Notifications > Tasks.
