1571 - FSR to VMware: "Error writing to VMWare Hypervisor disk"

Symptom

On attempting Full System Recovery to VMware, the following error presents:

Error: Error writing to VMWare Hypervisor disk (VIX_E_FILE_ACCESS_ERROR)

Cause

When writing to virtual disks located on an NFS datastore, the library used for virtual disk access may attempt to connect directly to the NFS server instead of routing the connection through the ESXi host. If the NFS server is not reachable from the machine where FSR is run, or the NFS server does not permit the machine running FSR write access to the NFS share, the above error may result.

Solution

The following workarounds are possible:

• Restore to a datastore that is not an NFS datastore.
• Restore to local VHDX files, upload them to the datastore, then manually create a virtual machine from the disks.
• Grant the machine running FSR write access to the NFS server.
