Introduction
Backup and recovery of Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) accounts forms part of our cloud service offering. For more on what functionality we support, click here.
Note: To use the EC2 backup service, you need to be both a RedApp company administrator, and an EC2 account holder for the account/s you want to backup.
Use the guide below to manage your backups.
How to configure the backup schedule
How to add an EC2 instance
1. In the RedApp, locate the relevant customer name in the sidebar and click on it.
2. Go to Amazon EC2 in the sidebar.
3. To connect a new account, click Add at the top right.
4. Click Add account.
5. Sign into AWS using the account you want to add to your Redstor backups.
6. Enter a name for the new stack. Tick the box I acknowledge that AWS CloudFormation might create IAM resources at the bottom and click Create stack.
You can now continue the setup in the RedApp.
7. Click View all accounts.
The newly connected account will appear in the list.
How to add a new account
1. To add a new EC2 instance for backup, go to the EC2 overview page and click Add at the top right.
2. A list of EC2 instances that are not yet protected by Redstor will appear.
Select which accounts to back up, then click Add at the bottom right. You will see a notification at the bottom of the page to show that these instances have been added.
3. The newly added instances will now be visible under All instances. To backup one or more instances immediately, select the relevant instances and click Backup.
A backup will be queued. You can monitor the progress of the backup at the top of the home page or under under Notifications > Tasks.
You will receive a message under Notifications > Recent when the backup completes.
How to configure the backup schedule
1. On the home page for the relevant account, click on Backup Schedule > Edit.
2. You can retain the default of a single daily backup, or you can set your backups to only run on specific days (custom). In either case, use the drop-down menu to set the backup time. Set your preferences and click on the check mark.
How to recover an account
1. On the home page for the relevant instance, locate the backup you wish to recover, click on the menu icon and select Recover.
You will need to select one of the following options:
- Current instance reverts the current instance to the selected snapshot.
- New instance restores the selected snapshot to a new instance. A new instance will be created in the relevant AWS account and this will be added to the RedApp under the associated account. Note that the new EC2 instance will not have any associated snapshots or a backup schedule yet.
2. If you selected Current instance, you will see the following confirmation message. Click Revert to proceed.
If you selected New instance, you will be prompted to enter a name for the new instance before you can proceed. When you're ready, click Recover.
Note: You will need to authenticate before any recovery.
You can then monitor the progress of your recovery on the instance's home page or under Notifications > Tasks.
You will receive a message under Notifications > Recent when the recovery completes.
How to delete an account
In your list of accounts, expand the menu to the right of the relevant account, then click Remove.
